First off, I’m starting a blog…there. I hate introductions, but I guess I have to give one. All that’s needed to know is that I live in Baltimore, but I’m originally from Martinez. You know what they say about the Orioles…they only exist so baseball fans in Baltimore can watch their favorite team pummel on someone in person.
So opening day is a few days away, and I’m as optimistic on this year as I was last year. This is the same amount of optimism I have for the upcoming season as I have for the 49ers’ upcoming season, which tells you much.
Barry Zito lost to the Triple-A team the other day. Now, this would probably be acceptable if it were in mid-February, where all players and prospects who didn’t go south of the border are shaking off their winter cobwebs, but you’re talking about $126 million contract, the largest for a pitcher in history, losing to a Triple-A team only a week before opening day? My God, it’s a good thing that Brian Sabean didn’t trade Tim Lincecum to the Blue Jays, otherwise you can throw this season away already. Only 8 wins in the Cactus League? Again, I know it’s the preseason, but even the Royals managed a few more wins than that. Check that, nearly twice as many wins as that. Noah Lowry is going to be late for the season, and we refuse to acknowledge the fact that we had Bonds. All I’m going to say on that subject is that everyone else did it, so punish everyone else or leave Barry alone. There! That’s all I’m going to say. Enough on Barry and the steroids.
Here’s what I do like about this upcoming season. We have a decent closer in Brian Wilson, or decent compared to Armando Benitez. By the way, speaking of Benitez, how long will it be before he gets sent to New Hampshire from Syracuse, assuming he can get his visa worked out? Also, we have Lincecum, who is probably one of the best pitchers in the league, and is a potential all-star. The only reason he’s not the number 1 pitcher is the fact that he doesn’t cost $126 million. When Lowry comes back, though, the sophomore will be moving to 4th. But, as long as he gets wins for my fantasy team, I’ll be happy.
I don’t care what anyone says, I like Randy Winn. Being in Barry Bonds’s shadow made him overlooked all season, but if you actually look at his numbers, he has a fantasy value while being a role player. That’s what I look for the most in a baseball player.
